“Naging masigla ang turismo sa Baliwag matapos ngang tanghaling isa sa mga Pilgrim Church ang San Augustine. Naging dahilan rin iyon para mas makilala pa ang munisipalidad ng Baliwag”, Bautista quoted.
Another attraction of the San Augustine Church in Lenten Season was the long procession of floats which carry different saints and the different chapters of the passion of the Christ, which was last year over 100 human sized images were lined along the streets of Baliwag and ended at the parish for the blessing ceremony.
Bautista added that some of the relics in the parish also attracted tourists to go to Baliwag. Some of these were almost 100 years of age which turned over to the parish by some of the priests and other private organization who committed in their faith to the church of San Augustine.
The structure of the church was Baroque architectural style, Spanish and Latin American architecture. It was founded on the year 1733 by Fr. Juan De Albarran, the first cura parroco of San Augustine. It was made limestone, gravel and sand, steel and bricks or ladrillo.
The 281 year old church undergoes major renovation. One of those is in the year 1870 after the country was shook by an earthquake in on June 3, 1863 in contract basis. The earthquake destructs the belfry of the church based on the book “Baliwag Then and Now” by Rolando e. Villacorte, the only book of history of Baliwag which can be found in the Lumang Munisipyo ng Baliwag.
Another restoration was did in the time of Bishop Amado Paulino y Hernandez, who was then a father of San Augustine, wherein they restore Rectory and the main building, including the addition of the marble slabs. They also include building of the tall canopy which supported by 2 sturdy columns on the main door entrance and smaller spire on top of the belfry was placed for the 4 giant trumpet-loudspeakers.
The San Augustine was considered the mother parish of Sto. Rosario Parish in Makinabang, Holy Family (Sagradea Familia) Parish in Tangos.
The Immaculate Conception Quasi Parish of Barangay Concepcion, the Nuestra Sra. delas Flores Parish of Virgen delas Flores and the Our Lady of Most Holy Rosary Parish Church in Makinabang are the churches bounded by the San Augustine Church.
According to the “Baliwag Then and Now”, there have been a conflict with the date where the San Augustine Parish was build. However, Fr. Luis G. Merino, a Spanish pries, said that the dates that have been debating when the church was really constructed were synchronize to each other.
By then, Fr. Merino since May 26, 1733 was the date where the Baliwag begins its existence or in Spanish facto existence it was recognized the date where San Augustine was build. Nevertheless, the date May 15, 1934 was the formal acceptance or recognition of the Baliwageno of the San Augustine.
