By: Alvin D. Perez
BALIWAG Bulacan- Considered as one of the oldest churches in Bulacan, San Augustine Church given the title as one of the Pilgrim Churches in the Bulacan by the Diocese of Malolo, Bulacan's ecclesiastical jurisdiction, which considered as one of the must-visited churches in the province.
The church was given the title in the year 2000, during the Great Jubilee since then it was considered one of the most visited churches in province especially during Lenten Season which people do “Visita Iglesia” tradition.
According to Rosie Bautista, former tourism officer of Baliwag, after having the title the number of tourists came to Baliwag to visit the parish doubles. He added that some of the students who gone educational tour choose the San Augustine as one of their itinerary.
Another attraction of the San Augustine Church in Lenten Season was the long procession of floats which carry different saints and the different chapters of the passion of the Christ, which was last year over 100 human sized images were lined along the streets of Baliwag and ended at the parish for the blessing ceremony.
Bautista added that some of the relics in the parish also attracted tourists to go to Baliwag. Some of these were almost 100 years of age which turned over to the parish by some of the priests and other private organization who committed in their faith to the church of San Augustine.
The structure of the church was Baroque architectural style, Spanish and Latin American architecture. It was founded on the year 1733 by Fr. Juan De Albarran, the first cura parroco of San Augustine. It was made limestone, gravel and sand, steel and bricks or ladrillo.
The 281 year old church undergoes major renovation. One of those is in the year 1870 after the country was shook by an earthquake in on June 3, 1863 in contract basis. The earthquake destructs the belfry of the church based on the book “Baliwag Then and Now” by Rolando e. Villacorte, the only book of history of Baliwag which can be found in the Lumang Munisipyo ng Baliwag.
Another restoration was did in the time of Bishop Amado Paulino y Hernandez, who was then a father of San Augustine, wherein they restore Rectory and the main building, including the addition of the marble slabs. They also include building of the tall canopy which supported by 2 sturdy columns on the main door entrance and smaller spire on top of the belfry was placed for the 4 giant trumpet-loudspeakers.
The San Augustine was considered the mother parish of Sto. Rosario Parish in Makinabang, Holy Family (Sagradea Familia) Parish in Tangos.
The Immaculate Conception Quasi Parish of Barangay Concepcion, the Nuestra Sra. delas Flores Parish of Virgen delas Flores and the Our Lady of Most Holy Rosary Parish Church in Makinabang are the churches bounded by the San Augustine Church.
According to the “Baliwag Then and Now”, there have been a conflict with the date where the San Augustine Parish was build. However, Fr. Luis G. Merino, a Spanish pries, said that the dates that have been debating when the church was really constructed were synchronize to each other.
By then, Fr. Merino since May 26, 1733 was the date where the Baliwag begins its existence or in Spanish facto existence it was recognized the date where San Augustine was build. Nevertheless, the date May 15, 1934 was the formal acceptance or recognition of the Baliwageno of the San Augustine.

By: Alvin Perez BAJ 3A
BALIWAG, Bulacan- Legitimate and student journalists marched their way towards the justice for the Ampatuan Massacre victims in 2016 as message for the administration along the front Bulacan Capitol Park as commemoration for 4th year anniversary last November 21, 2013.
Tributes to the 58 persons, 32 of them were journalists, who have been killed in the November 23 Ampatuan Massacre was the theme of the assembly of the student and media practitioners. All they asked is to give justice among the victims of the said incident by 2016.
The theme of the event was based on the promised of President Benigno Aquino III last 2010 as he was running for presidency.
According to Dino Balabo, President of National Union of Journalist Bulacan Chapter and Philippine Star Correspondent, said he hopes at least before President Aquino leave the position (by 2016), because if will be another fight if a new termed president will sit in the position.
In the written speech Justice by 2016 (Nagkakaisang pahayag kaugnay sa ika-apat na taong paggunita sa Ampatuan Massacre), they challenged President Aquino’s Administration to give impartiality to those who have been victim before he went down as the president by June 2016.
In another statement of Mr. Balabo, he said that one of the problem why the cased hasn’t been done is because of the justice system in the country. According to him, though there is a separate court that the case is being heard and the hearing is done almost three times a week, the justice scheme made the accused do several delaying tactics.
“Mabagal ang ating judicial system sa bansa, because it is being abused by the defense (ampatuan side). Every na maghihearing meron silang motion for reconsiderations. And that is a legal tactic. A dilatory tactic”, Mr. Balabo quoted.
However, in added statement of Mr. Balabo, he said that the resolving of the case can be achievable if president will pursue the case.
In the added statement of Rommel Gamos, GMA stringer who also joined the event, this time frame of 2016 is not only for the justice in the Maguindanao Massacre victims, but also for the record of zero media killing case. In addition Gamos said that the media should not be portrayed to be killed by those who had power.
“Magset din ng time frame zero media killing during the time of P-noy we will challenge him in zero media killing. We have to challenge the government.
Students of Bulacan State University (BulSU) and other schools who joined the event also spoke their feelings about the delay in resolving the case and hoping to end the impunity in the country for the future of the media.
Jasmine Loraine Tan, editor-in-chief of the Pacesetter, the official Publication of BulSU, said in her speech they believe that there will be continuous media killings in the country as long as the government didn’t gave protection to those in the media industry. In addition, she also said that they were hoping that the there will come a time that the students and people don’t need to organized another event that features the culture of impunity and finding justice.
Andrew Razal, 4th year journalism student of BulSU, said in his speech that may the event will be a way to save the media on the culture of impunity.
“Let this (4th year Commemoration of Maguindanao Massacre) be a call for action and a call for justice. Let this be an instrument to end the impunity to save the future media”, Mr. Razal delivered in his speech.
